About Us

Protecting Midwives and Doulas Protects Reproductive Justice

Our Mission

We envision a patient-centered healthcare system in which both pregnant patients and providers feel safe, secure, and honored. Our attorneys have the most experience in the United States in the legal representation of doulas and out-of-hospital midwives. We understand the full range of legal challenges, risks, and threats that midwives and doulas can face in their efforts to provide ethical, supportive care to women and pregnant people. We are committed to providing legal protection and security to midwives, doulas, and birthing people.

Our Founder

Hermine Hayes-Klein, JD is an attorney and advocate for reproductive justice and human rights in pregnancy and childbirth. For over a decade, Hermine has worked on legal actions and advocacy projects related to informed consent violations, racism, and obstetric violence around childbirth, and represents midwives and doulas around the US and beyond. Hermine founded the international non-profit Human Rights in Childbirth in The Hague in 2012, and organized 6 international conferences on that topic in the US, Europe, South Africa, and India. She spent years developing a national and international network of legal advocates working for reproductive justice in pregnancy and childbirth, and is collaborating with many of those attorneys to expand the reach of the Birth Rights Law Project. Hermine's years of experience defending and advocating for midwives and doulas has given her a unique understanding of the legal challenges they face and how best to protect them.
